Our goal is to give our students the necessary self defense skills and tools to survive an attack. We train empty hand defenses against punches, grabs, kicks, sticks and knives. It is not our intent to win trophies or medals at a martial arts tournament, instead we are singularly focused on defending ourselves, and our families.
Jeff Grant is the head instructor and a 5th degree black belt in Kajukembo. He has been a student of the martial arts for 27 years and an instructor for the last 15 years.
Paul Enes started his journey in 2014, and dedicated himself to the training necessary to achieve his black belt. Paul continues to gain knowledge and hone his skills, while also leading our kids classes.
Brandon Mosley began his Kajukenbo journey in California. When Brandon made the move to Texas his instructors in California advised that he seek us out. Brandon came to us with his blue belt and now continues his Kajukembo journey with us as a black belt.
Kajukenbo is the first American martial art and the first original mixed martial art. It was created in Hawaii in the late 1940's at the Palama Settlement in Oahu, Hawaii. Five martial artist, each from a different style and background, would meet to train with and learn from one another. These five would soon come to be known as the Black Belt Society and be credited with developing Kajukenbo.
These five men are:
- Peter YY Choo, a practitioner of Tang Soo Do (KA)
- Joe Holck, a practitioner of Jujitsu, and Frank Ordonez, a practitioner of Judo (JU)
- Adriano Emperado, a practitioner of Kenpo (KEN)
- Clarence Chang, a practitioner of Si Lum Pai or Chinese Boxing and American Boxing (BO)
The system is designed for self-defense utilizing 5 martial arts: Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Kenpo, and Boxing. Legend has it that techniques were tested on the streets for effectiveness. If it was found that the technique did not work, the founders would not put it into the system. Therefore, at one point all of the original techniques were put to the test.
The system is designed to condition the student for survival on the street. The original method of Kajukenbo was tough and hard on the student. Students at the time received their 'Training" more like beatings. Emperado was known for saying, "Make pain your friend." The training was intended to be street effective and if you were afraid of pain you wouldn't last on the street. The Hawaiian's wanted to create a tough and skillful system of combat. The goal at the time was not to gain as many students as possible, but instead focused on teaching the students you had to survive an attack. Once a student was accepted they became part of the "Ohana" or family. Kajukenbo is still practiced today with the same vigor and mind set. Kajukenbo is and will always be a strong and effective martial art and self defense system.
